I kept to myself and managed to stay clear of Beverly until the last day when I saw her running around screaming hysterically as her house burned. I considered going over to comfort her, but I didn’t—I was content watching the flames from afar. I had this sickening vision of Grandma’s parents getting burned alive during the Holocaust and wondered what they thought at the exact moment they realized it was the end.
